Soot by definition is a fine dispersion of black particles, mainly carbon, produced by incomplete combustion.  Barker & Herbert investigators examine homes and buildings that have a build-up of black particles, in order to determine the cause of the soot problem.  Our chemical laboratory then determines what the soot is composed of.  These examinations will help you or your client to identify the source of the soot and correct the problem.

Common Sources of Soot

  • Candles

  • Gas Furnaces and Water Heaters

  • Gas Stoves

  • Gas Logs

  • Fireplaces

  • Accidental Fires

  • Kerosene Lamps

  • Kerosene Heaters

  • Tobacco Smoke
