Barker & Herbert's chemical laboratory uses state-of-the-art equipment and court-accepted ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) methods.

Our chemists know credibility and independent analyses are crucial to our clients' cases.

Some laboratory tests are truly one-of-a-kind procedures that require resourcefulness and creativity to solve clients' dilemmas.

Some possible cases that you might need our services for include:

  • You or your client have a fire.  Was an accelerant used?

  • Painters leave behind staining rags. Did these spontaneously heat and cause a fire?

  • Did contaminants on a manufactured part prevent adhesive from sticking to it?

  • Why is paint cracking and flaking?

  • Why is black dust on a ceiling fan or walls?

By using state-of-the-art lab equipment, chemists can make better judgments about the presence -- or absence -- of various compounds. This gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), for instance, detects accelerants even if there's "background interference" from burned products.

Chemists use flash-point testing methods to determine the lowest temperatures at which materials give off enough vapors to ignite when exposed to flames.

Barker & Herbert analysts, who work with lottery corporations from all over the world, have performed security tests on instant lottery tickets since 1980. The firm tests thousands of tickets annually for their ability to withstand environmental exposure or be compromised.

Barker & Herbert chemists work with government agencies, manufacturers, and other businesses who need accurate drug test results. Chemists use wet-chemical methods to perform a presumptive test for the presence of cocaine. Then, they use infrared spectrophotometric or gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis to confirm the presence of the drug.
